Happy Parents, Happy Kids by Ann Douglas (173)

This is a wonderful book about how we should parent our children at all ages. Parents are there to show their kids how to be their best. However, this means that parents have to be their best themselves before they can pass on this attitude onto their kids.

Parenting is VERY hard. I sometimes notice how difficult it is at McDonald’s. I sit and enjoy my coffee and sometimes look around to see how hard it is for parents to settle their kids down and have a good time without wrecking the place or making the mess. Parenting is a full-time job that has so many different sides and textures. Yet it is a thankless job.

Good parents are hard to come by.  This is especially the case in this age of anxiety. If you have kids in this age, we worry. And there are so many reasons to worry.

This age of anxiety affects our parenting. Parenting doesn’t happen in a vacuum. We can’t help but be affected by what’s happening in the world beyond our front doors. And when it comes to economic forces, the impact on our parenting can be quite dramatic.

Parental anxiety is not just taking its toll on our psyches.  It is also taking its toll on our finances. We are always comparing ourselves to others and we are spending a lot of money to keep our kids competitively engaged in sports and other committees so that our kids can compete with the other kids in school and in our neighbourhoods. It really is quite sad and sinister too.

So, we have to learn how to tame our anxiety so that we don’t create anxious kids. The good news is that we can help our kids cope with anxiety and we can also learn how to cope with it ourselves.

This book examines all of these anxieties and shows parents how to overcome them. Each chapter has another way to help parents become better at what they do and to also take the time to take care of themselves.

I loved this book. Parenting isn’t easy. It is easy to bring up complete and whole kids when we are filled with anxiety ourselves. This book should show us how to live in this world and bring up happy and fulfilled kids. We can only do that by being happy and fulfilled ourselves.

I loved this book and will be recommending it to all my friends.
