This is a very informative book about how we are brainwashed into eating junk food daily. The book has many side-bars with mind-blowing facts that will make most readers pause and reflect.
For instance, I had no idea that forth-five billion dollars a year is spent by fast-food restaurants to market their products. That’s hard to believe! No wonder MacDonald’s and Pizza Hut are always calling our names as we drive by them.
Also, I didn’t know that one-third of all food around the world is wasted. That’s 1.3 billion tones of edible food at a cost of $750 billion every year. That food can feed a lot of poor people in our communities if we didn’t waste so much.
Also, everywhere we go, we are told that we should eat this junk food, and eat that one. An ad may display a new type of pizza that no one has heard of. Immediately, our mouth starts to water and we must have it! The key question is would we want the pizza if we never saw it in the Ad? Probably not!
We all need o speak out against junk food. Although this book is written for kids, we can surely all learn to be ambassadors for whole food. However, since a lot of these ads are geared towards children they must also stands up against these ads by eating more whole food.
Since kids are a captive audience, however, they are more susceptible to these messages. But lets face it, adults can also be susceptible as well. This is because junk food is made to look so good and its ubiquitous. The only time we have ads for veggies and fruit is in the summer through Foodland.
This book has been an eye-opener for me, as I’m sure it will be for parents. We all need to not be persuaded by fast food ads. We can’t ban them here in Ontario but I wish we would at least limit the exposure of such ads on TV while kids are up.
