Inner Beauty by Xiaolan Zhao (93)

This book is a must-read for all women who believe that beauty can be fostered from the outside. This books shows that beauty can only be developed from the inside out. There is no lotion or potion that can help us feel beautiful.  Instead, it is only from within that we can do that.

Most times, women don’t want to hear the easy solutions such as in order to look and feel beautiful, you must eat properly, get enough rest, and exercise. We want the expensive creams and make-up. But that outside paradigm of beauty is precisely what Xiaolan Zhao criticizes and turns over on its head.  And it is GREAT that she does!

It is about time that women did the natural things to make themselves feel good and look good. Because when we feel good, we will look good. And when we feel confident, we will look beautiful–regardless of how much make up we wear.

Thank you Dr. Zhao for such a great book!  It like a breath of fresh air in a world where we are never as pretty as the last three hundred-dollar cream that comes out onto the market. I needed you to honour who we are as women, and to realize that we can go back to basics and rely on older Chinese ways of taking care of ourselves to be beautiful.

I would encourage all the women in the Book Mine Reading Club to read this book!

Dr. Xiaolan Zhao was working as a Western-trained surgeon in China when she became interested in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and decided to go back to school to earn a degree in TCM. After immigrating to Canada in the late 1980’s, she opened a TCM Clinic in Toronto. Since then her practise has grown to more than 12,000 devoted patients. She also has a website at http://www.chinesehealing.ca.
