Sky Sisters (6)

Sky Sisters
Written by: Jan Bourdeau Waboose

This is a wonderful picture book for children set in Northern Ontario. The illustrations transport the kids into the dark, cold recesses of this area too.

The story is about Nishiime, the younger sister who recalls the words of her grandmother. It isn’t easy to be silent. Gradually she begins to treasure the stillness and the wonderful experiences it brings. She and her sister are welcomed by a rabbit, deer, and coyote.

After an exhilarating walk and patient waiting, the girls are rewarded by the arrival of the Northern Lights or SkySpirits dancing and shimmering in the sky.

This is a story about the bonds between sisters, between generations and between humans and nature. The rich art is infused with the chill of a silent northern night, the warmth of the family circle and the radiance of a child’s wonder.

I loved this book from beginning to end, and I know that kids of all ages will enjoy it too.
