The Little Shadows by Marina Endicott (9)

This is a GREAT novel by a Canadian author who was a finalist for the Scotia Bank Giller Prize!  What a triumph!  But it is not surprising given what a wonderful story-teller she really is!  I was glued to the book and couldn’t put it down!

In The Little Shadows the reader follows the lives of three sisters as they become know as The Belle Auroras on stage. Aurora is the eldest sister and she is breathtakingly beautiful. Clover is the second sister.  She is thoughtful and a thinker in many ways.  And lastly, there is Bella.  She is a year younger than Clover and she is headstrong and knows what she wants.  This is SO great to see in a young girl.

The girls are taken care by a Mama who is on the edge in many more ways than one. Mama probably got this way after their father passed away way earlier than he was supposed to.

The sisters have nothing more than youth and hope.  But the author shows how each one slowly and steadily becomes a unique and accomplished artist while becoming adults among a cast of charmers and charlatans.

This book will transport the reader into the world of these girls and the Mama.  I loved the book and found it hopeful, despite the difficult life that the girls had.
